I quit big4 about 10 months ago. I still have 2 laptops from them (one that doesn’t work)

The Challenge of Returning Equipment After Leaving a Big Firm

Leaving a large firm can be a daunting experience, especially when it comes to wrapping up the logistical tasks that follow. About ten months ago, I made the decision to part ways with one of the “Big Four” consulting firms, and while I thought the process would be straightforward, I quickly discovered that returning their equipment would become a cumbersome endeavor.

Upon my departure, I carefully filled out a survey indicating the company-owned items I still had in my possession, which included two laptops—one of which was no longer functional. Understanding I would need to return these items, I marked the survey to request shipping labels and boxes to facilitate the return, as commuting 40 minutes to the office while dealing with parking fees was not practical for me, especially since I was primarily working from home.

Despite my initial efforts, the shipping materials never arrived. After waiting for a reasonable period, I decided to follow up through a phone call. However, my call was rerouted to another office due to a lack of response at my original contact point. The representative assured me they would have someone return my call with further assistance, but, not surprisingly, that follow-up never materialized.

Now, months later, I find myself facing yet another challenge. My current job requires a functional home office space, and those two laptops are simply taking up valuable room in my workspace. I know that I should pick up the phone once more to pursue this matter, yet it’s frustrating to feel that returning these items should not require such effort.

Finding myself at a crossroads, I’m left pondering how returning company property can be surprisingly complicated. If you’ve faced similar struggles, I’d love to hear your stories and strategies for managing these types of logistical frustrations!
