The Challenges of Returning Company Property: A Personal Experience

It has been nearly ten months since I made the decision to leave my position at a major consulting firm. As part of the transition, I was left with two company laptops, one of which is non-functional.

When I departed, I completed a survey detailing the equipment that I had in my possession and indicated my need for shipping labels and boxes to facilitate the return of these devices. Given my remote work situation, I preferred not to deal with a 40-minute commute to the office, especially to resettle these items in person, which would also involve the added expense of parking.

Despite my initial proactive steps, I found myself waiting indefinitely for the shipping materials to arrive. After some time passed without response, I decided to reach out via phone. However, my call was unexpectedly routed to another office, due to a lack of response from my designated location. The representative I spoke with took my contact details and assured me that someone would follow up shortly. Yet, that follow-up never materialized.

Fast forward several months, and these two laptops have become increasingly cumbersome in my home office. As I focus on my new job, the clutter from the old equipment only serves as a reminder of a past chapter in my career that I am eager to close.

While I know I should follow up once more to resolve the return issue, I can’t help but feel frustrated by the complexity of what should be a straightforward process.
