The Myth of Management Authority: Why We Shouldn’t Deify Executives
In the corporate landscape, there’s a pervasive trend that many of us encounter: the idolization of senior management. It’s all too common to hear individuals gasp in awe at the mere mention of a high-ranking executive’s name. As someone who believes in equality and a down-to-earth approach, I find this behavior troubling and frankly, unnecessary.
Consider the following scenario: you’re casually having a conversation when someone leans in and whispers, “Did you know you’re talking to Mark? He’s the CFO of the firm.” My response? A resounding indifference. To me, Mark is simply a colleague with his own set of responsibilities and challenges—no more, no less.
Why should the title of Chief Financial Officer hold more weight than that of any other employee? It’s essential to recognize that everyone in the organization, regardless of their position, is human. Sure, senior leaders have their roles and influence, but elevating them to an untouchable pedestal is counterproductive.
I engage with my colleagues, whether they hold a title or not, based on the merits of their character and their contributions to the team. The only time I feel a heightened sense of responsibility is when I’m directly communicating with clients or team members who depend on my guidance and support. In those situations, my focus is on being fully present and doing my best for them, not on the hierarchy.
Let’s challenge the automatic reverence we often give to senior authority. After all, every employee—executive or entry-level—plays a vital role in the success of the organization. Instead of being overwhelmed by titles, we should foster an environment of communication and collaboration where everyone feels valued for their unique contributions.
In conclusion, let’s step back from the glorification of senior management and engage with each other as equals. It’s time to recognize that while titles may carry weight, it’s our collective efforts and shared respect that ultimately propel our success.
