Passed CPA Exam, Have Analytics + FP&A Background, but No One Will Interview Me – What Can I Do?

Breaking Into Public Accounting: Navigating Challenges After Passing the CPA Exam

Hello, everyone!

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve successfully passed all sections of the CPA exam and have accumulated 150 college credits. My professional background includes experience as a Financial Analyst and an Operations Analyst in the logistics sector, where I honed my skills in planning, reporting, and data management. I am well-versed in working with data and have strong proficiency in Excel and Power BI.

Recently, I made the decision to pivot into public Accounting as a step toward establishing a long-term career in the United States, particularly in Texas. However, I have encountered significant hurdles in my job search. Many firms appear to prioritize candidates who possess:

  • A relevant U.S. Accounting degree
  • A minimum of one year of public accounting experience

Unfortunately, I do not meet either of these criteria, making it challenging to secure interviews.

I want to note that I’m flexible in my job search; I would readily accept a position in the $60K range and am open to relocating or working at a local CPA firm. However, pursuing a master’s degree is not currently feasible for me due to my responsibilities as a caregiver.

I’m reaching out to see if anyone has faced a similar situation during their transition to public accounting. I would greatly appreciate any tips, insights, or strategies for breaking into the field without the standard local credentials or prior experience in public accounting. Your guidance could be tremendously helpful as I navigate this challenging phase of my career.

Thank you for your support!
