Passed CPA Exam, Have Analytics + FP&A Background, but No One Will Interview Me – What Can I Do?

Navigating the Job Market: Strategies for Breaking into Public Accounting

Hello everyone,

I hope this message finds you well. I recently accomplished a significant milestone by passing all sections of the CPA exam and accumulating 150 credit hours toward my education. My professional background includes experience as both a Financial Analyst and an Operations Analyst in the logistics sector, roles that honed my skills in planning, reporting, and data management. I am particularly adept at utilizing tools like Excel and Power BI to analyze and present data.

With these qualifications, I decided to pivot to public Accounting, a move I believe will facilitate my long-term goals of establishing myself in the U.S. I am currently situated in Texas and eager to transition into this new field. However, I am encountering substantial challenges in landing interviews.

A common requirement I’ve observed from many firms is the necessity for a U.S. Accounting degree and at least one year of public Accounting experience. Unfortunately, I do not possess either of these qualifications, which has made it difficult to get my foot in the door.

My expectations are manageable; I am open to positions with salaries around $60,000 and am willing to relocate for the right opportunity, even if it means working at a local CPA firm. Pursuing a master’s degree isn’t feasible for me at this time as I have responsibilities to support a dependent.

I’m reaching out to the community for guidance. Has anyone faced a similar challenge in breaking into public accounting without local credentials or direct experience? Any advice or insights on how to navigate this transition would be immensely appreciated. Thank you for your support!
