Finishing my internship soon, should I tell my manager I’m not going back to school?

Navigating Career Choices: Should I Share My Future Plans with My Manager?

As I prepare to wrap up my internship, I find myself facing an unexpected dilemma that many ambitious professionals might relate to. After recently graduating, I had every intention of pursuing a master’s degree this fall. I received acceptance from my chosen university, registered for classes, and even faced the reality of a substantial tuition bill.

Earlier this year, I secured a spring internship, fully anticipating that I would continue my education alongside my professional development. However, the rapidly changing job market has compelled me to reconsider my initial plans. I’ve reached a decision to defer my admission for at least a year—with the university’s approval—and instead, I’m contemplating diving into the workforce. In fact, I have an enticing job offer that begins this September. Given the unpredictability of the job scene, turning down this opportunity feels like a substantial risk.

Throughout this journey, I’ve consistently communicated to colleagues and my manager that I would be starting my master’s program this year. The contradiction between my current narrative and my revised plans has weighed heavily on me. It’s a challenging position to navigate, and the stress of maintaining my original story has certainly not made it easier.

My situation is further complicated by my hope of receiving a return offer from my internship, particularly for a role on a different team that has piqued my interest. However, I am aware that this team has not brought on new hires for the past two years, making my prospects seem bleak.

Now, I’m at a crossroads. Should I inform my manager about my decision to defer graduate school? And should I also inquire about the possibility of a return offer on that elusive team? The decision feels monumental, and clarity seems necessary as I chart my path forward.

As I contemplate these questions, I recognize the importance of open communication in a professional setting. I’d love to hear thoughts from others who have faced similar crossroads. Share your insights and experiences—how did you navigate informing your superior of significant career shifts? Your advice might just guide me through this pivotal moment.
