Graduated today with my bachelor’s! Any advice for the future?

Just Graduated with My Bachelor’s in Accounting: Seeking Your Wisdom!

Hello, everyone!

Today marks a significant milestone in my life—I’ve officially graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As a 22-year-old who has spent the last few years following this community, I felt it was time to seize the opportunity to share my journey and seek your valuable guidance as I transition into the workforce.

My Game Plan

I’m looking to kick off my job search in earnest by mid to late June. A family vacation is on the horizon in early June, which will keep me occupied, but upon my return, I plan to dive into applying for Accounting positions. Given that I live in Louisiana, my initial focus will likely be on opportunities within my parish, leveraging my sister’s connections in the public school system. I’m also considering exploring career advancements at my current job at Walmart, where I’ve spent nearly five years on the sales floor, aiming to transition into an office role.

Seeking Your Insights

Now, I’d love your thoughts on my plan! Here are a few specific questions I have:

  1. Is my job application strategy sound? Should I pursue all types of accounting positions—internships, part-time, or full-time—if I align with the requirements?

  2. Assessing My Profile: My overall GPA stands at 3.1, and while I haven’t achieved honors or completed internships, my experience at Walmart has provided me with a solid work ethic. Will my GPA and lack of internships hinder my job prospects?

  3. Understanding Compensation: What starting salary should I anticipate, and what’s a reasonable figure to negotiate?

  4. Enhancing My Resume: Considering my limited extracurricular activities and internship experience, what additional elements should I spotlight on my resume to present myself in the best light during interviews?

I have heard from professors and others in the field that a bachelor’s degree in accounting, even without an impressive GPA or extensive experience, is enough to open doors. With the additional 150 credit hours I’ve already accumulated for my CPA license, thanks to my Spanish minor and various credits, I hope my bilingual skills will further enhance my employability. Is this perspective accurate?

I know this is a lengthy post, but your advice is invaluable as I navigate these new waters. I’m open to any insights or suggestions you might have. If there are specifics you’d like to clarify, don’t hesitate to ask!

Thank you in advance for
