Passed CPA Exam, Have Analytics + FP&A Background, but No One Will Interview Me – What Can I Do?

Navigating the Challenges of Entering Public Accounting: Seeking Guidance

Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out to share my experience and seek advice as I embark on a new career path in public Accounting. Recently, I successfully completed all sections of the CPA exam and hold 150 credit hours. My background includes roles as a Financial Analyst and Operations Analyst in logistics, where I honed my skills in planning, reporting, and data management. I am particularly adept at using Excel and Power BI to manage and analyze data effectively.

Having made the decision to transition into public Accounting for a more stable and sustainable future in the U.S., I am currently based in Texas. However, I’ve encountered significant challenges in securing interviews. Many firms I come across seem to have two primary requirements:

  1. A U.S. accounting degree
  2. At least one year of public accounting experience

Unfortunately, I do not meet either of these criteria, and as a result, I am struggling to even land an interview.

I’m quite flexible; I am aiming for a position that offers around $60,000 in salary and am open to relocating anywhere. The idea of working at a local CPA firm appeals to me as well. Pursuing a master’s program isn’t an option for me at this time due to familial responsibilities.

I am reaching out to see if anyone has undergone a similar transition or can offer advice on how to break into public accounting without the typical local credentials or experience. Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
