Is it just me or do we too frequently deify senior management? I don’t care that Bob is the President of The national Audit practice and that I should be shaking my in my boots as he approaches me. He’s just a fucking dude to me, and it’s pathetic to see him as anything else.

Rethinking the Reverence for Senior Management: A Call for Authentic Engagement

In today’s corporate landscape, it often seems that senior management occupies an almost untouchable pedestal. We hear statements like, “Did you know you’re speaking to Mark, the CFO?” and it can create a culture of reverence that may not be entirely justified. But let’s take a step back and question this narrative.

Do we really need to place such high regard on individuals simply because of their title? In my experience, these senior leaders are, at the end of the day, just people—no more deserving of awe than anyone else in the workplace. When I encounter someone in a top position, I refuse to be intimidated. Their titles don’t shield them from being human.

Much of the time, my focus shifts when interacting with clients or team members; that’s when I feel a real responsibility to engage meaningfully. These interactions require my full attention because they are foundational to trust and collaboration. However, the intimidation factor surrounding seniority? That’s a barrier we need to dismantle.

Let’s foster a culture where we can engage with senior leaders without the anxiety that often comes with their positions. After all, respect and authenticity can coexist without the need for deification. Instead of fearing the presence of those in authority, let’s interact with them as equals, promoting a healthier, more productive work environment. It’s time we shift our perspective and create connections built on mutual respect rather than titles.
