I’ve been job hopping every 1-2 years and need advice.

Navigating Job Hopping: Seeking Guidance on Career Growth

In today’s fast-paced job market, frequent career changes can often lead to a disjointed resume and uncertainty about professional credibility. After spending six years in the field of tax, I’ve found myself in this exact situation, and I’m reaching out for insights from those who may have faced similar challenges.

Throughout my career, I’ve moved between jobs every one to two years. This pattern was partly driven by my desire for incremental salary increases during a time when the pandemic offered unexpected opportunities for negotiation. Although I’ve managed to achieve a debt-free status, the financial compensation I received often felt inadequate, leaving me yearning for a more sustainable income.

Now, as I approach my two-year anniversary in my current position, I find myself contemplating a move out of state. While this role has been comfortable and presents an opportunity for growth—my boss is keen on preparing me for a partner position—I worry that my track record of job hopping may undermine my work ethic in the eyes of potential employers, especially in high-cost living (HCOL) areas.

As I consider the next steps in my career, I’m faced with a dilemma: should I begin applying for new positions and hope that hiring managers will understand my unique circumstances, or would it be more prudent to omit certain jobs from my resume?

I am keen to hear from others who have navigated similar crossroads in their careers. How did you manage perceptions of job-hopping, and what strategies did you find effective in moving forward? Your advice would be invaluable as I look to redefine my career path and establish credibility in the industry.
