Is it just me or do we too frequently deify senior management? I don’t care that Bob is the President of The national Audit practice and that I should be shaking my in my boots as he approaches me. He’s just a fucking dude to me, and it’s pathetic to see him as anything else.

In many workplaces, there exists a tendency to elevate senior management to almost mythical status. We often hear colleagues whispering in awe about prominent figures like the firm’s president or CFO, as if their titles alone command respect and fear. But is it time to reassess this attitude?

Let’s take a moment to reflect: Why do we feel compelled to treat senior leaders with such reverence? For instance, does it truly matter that Bob holds the title of President of the National Audit Practice? To me, he is simply a person like anyone else, and it’s disheartening to think we should view him otherwise.

The common refrain, “Did you know you were talking to Mark…he’s the CFO of the firm,” seems to suggest that a title imbues someone with special significance. In reality, it doesn’t change anything for me. I find it difficult to muster any concern over someone’s rank within the company, especially when it comes to day-to-day interactions.

The only scenario where hierarchy holds weight for me is when I’m engaged with clients or direct reports. In those instances, I recognize it’s crucial to be attentive and considerate, as I feel a genuine moral obligation to those who rely on me. However, when it comes to senior management, that reverence fades quickly.

No one should feel intimidated simply by the presence of a higher-up. It’s crucial to approach all colleagues, regardless of their titles, with respect and authenticity. By dismantling this lofty perception of senior roles, we cultivate a more inclusive workplace where everyone, regardless of their position, can contribute meaningfully to discussions.
