As my internship draws to a close, I find myself at a crossroads, contemplating whether to be transparent with my manager about my decision to defer my graduate studies. Allow me to share my journey and the dilemma that has left me unsure of how to proceed.

Recently, I proudly completed my undergraduate degree with aspirations of diving into graduate school this fall. After getting accepted into my desired program and registering for classes, I anticipated the next chapter of my academic journey. However, as the job market continues to shift, I’ve found myself reconsidering my plans. The university has kindly allowed me to postpone my enrollment, which opens up an opportunity for me to enter the workforce instead. I even have a job offer in hand, set to start in September, making the prospect of unemployment a looming concern.

During this internship—a requirement I was told necessitated my status as a current student—I consistently communicated my intention to begin my Master’s program. To maintain this facade has been challenging, causing quite a bit of internal conflict. The only scenario in which I would even consider moving forward with my Master’s this year is if I secure a return offer from my current internship team—or preferably from another team within the company that has not hired anyone in quite some time. To be frank, it seems unlikely.

Now, I’m wrestling with the idea of discussing my change in plans with my manager. Should I be upfront about my decision to defer grad school? Additionally, would it be prudent to broach the subject of potential opportunities for a return offer on that elusive team?

This situation raises important questions about transparency and professional growth. It seems clear that open dialogue could benefit my career trajectory, yet I’m also acutely aware of the risks involved. As I navigate this pivotal moment, I seek to strike a balance between honesty and ambition.
