Navigating the Challenge of Managing a Disappointing Direct Report
As a new manager, one of the most significant challenges can arise when you find yourself supervising a direct report who fails to meet expectations. Recently, I experienced this firsthand after my team hired a candidate to fill a critical role following my promotion. After an extensive and hopeful search, we brought someone on board who initially impressed us during the interview process. Unfortunately, once they started, their demeanor shifted dramatically.
Despite investing time in training and clearly outlining responsibilities, the new hire struggled to complete tasks and, shockingly, seemed disengaged from their role altogether. After just six weeks, they decided to resign. In those final two weeks, I continued to delegate small assignments, but they frequently assured me they would get to them, only to leave me performing their duties instead.
While I can’t help but feel disappointed that this employee didn’t work out—recognizing that sometimes a role just isn’t a good fit—I find myself even more taken aback by their lack of professionalism. It’s bewildering to think that someone who has been in the workforce for several years would act in such a careless manner. In my experience, if I were to leave a job after less than two months, I would go to great lengths to maintain a positive relationship with my employer. Yet, this individual appeared unconcerned, almost indifferent to their responsibilities.
I share this experience partly to vent but also to seek insight from others who may have faced similar situations. Have you ever encountered such a stark lack of professionalism in the workplace? How did you handle it? I’m interested to hear your thoughts and experiences, as this has truly been an eye-opening experience for me in my role as a manager.
