Passed CPA Exam, Have Analytics + FP&A Background, but No One Will Interview Me – What Can I Do?

Navigating the Path to Public Accounting: Seeking Advice After Passing the CPA Exam

Hello everyone,

I am reaching out to gather insights and advice from those who have navigated the challenging waters of breaking into public Accounting. Recently, I successfully completed all sections of the CPA exam and have a solid educational foundation with 150 credit hours. My professional background includes roles as a Financial Analyst and Operations Analyst in logistics, where I honed my skills in planning, reporting, and data management. I am proficient in tools like Excel and Power BI, which I believe are valuable assets.

My goal is to pivot into public Accounting as part of my long-term plan to establish myself in the U.S., and I am currently based in Texas. However, I have encountered some significant barriers in the job market. Many firms seem to have strict prerequisites, particularly:

  • A U.S. accounting degree
  • At least one year of public accounting experience

Unfortunately, I do not meet these requirements, which has made securing interviews quite challenging.

I am flexible in my expectations regarding salary—I am open to positions around $60K—and I am willing to relocate, including options with local CPA firms. Pursuing a master’s program is not feasible for me at the moment due to my responsibilities as a parent.

I would greatly appreciate insights from anyone who has successfully made a similar transition. What strategies can I employ to break into public accounting despite lacking local credentials or experience? Your advice could be invaluable as I navigate this complex journey. Thank you in advance for your support!
