Graduated today with my bachelor’s! Any advice for the future?

Celebrating Graduation: Seeking Guidance for My Career in Accounting

Hello, everyone!

I’m thrilled to share that I have officially graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As a 22-year-old who has been quietly observing this community for the past few years, I decided it’s about time I reach out and seek some advice as I embark on my job search journey.

My plan is to start applying for full-time positions in Accounting around mid to late June, as I have a family vacation planned in early June to reconnect with relatives I haven’t seen in ages. Once I return, I’m eager to jump into the job market. I intend to begin my search within my local parish here in Louisiana, as my sister works in the public school system and could provide valuable insights. I’m also considering opportunities at Walmart, my current employer, aiming to transition into a corporate role rather than staying on the sales floor.

I’m keen to hear your thoughts on this strategy. Is it wise to apply for any and all Accounting roles—internships, part-time, or full-time—as long as I meet the qualifications? I’m concerned that my overall GPA of 3.1, coupled with a lack of honors, awards, or substantial internship experience (having only participated in one interview for an internship last October), might hinder my chances in the job market. Additionally, I would love to know what a reasonable starting salary would be and how to best communicate my worth during interviews.

Having worked at Walmart for nearly five years since my senior year of high school, I’d like to know how to effectively showcase my experience on my resume and in interviews, especially considering I haven’t engaged in extracurricular activities or internship programs.

I’ve heard from professionals and within this subreddit that in the field of accounting, securing a position is definitely possible with just a bachelor’s degree. I also understand that completing the additional 150 hours required for my CPA exam—the result of earning a minor in Spanish and leveraging transfer credits—can make me a more attractive candidate. Is this an accurate understanding?

I appreciate any insights or advice you can share. This is an important transition for me, and I’m open to all suggestions. Please feel free to ask for any further details if needed.

Thank you for your support!
