Navigating Career Transitions: Seeking Advice on Job Hopping in Tax

As a professional with six years of experience in the tax field, I find myself at a crossroads, and I’m reaching out for guidance on how to navigate my career path effectively. My journey has included frequent job changes every one to two years, which has left my resume looking less than ideal.

The primary motivator for my transitions has been the opportunity for incremental pay increases that arose during the pandemic. Despite being debt-free and striving for a better quality of life, my previous roles often provided minimal financial compensation. Currently, I am nearing the two-year mark in my present position, which has offered more stability and comfort in terms of work-life balance.

However, I’m contemplating a move out of state for personal reasons, and this has sparked concerns about how my frequent job changes may impact my credibility and work ethic in the eyes of potential employers. It’s a bittersweet situation; my current supervisor is enthusiastic about grooming me for a partner-level position, but the demands associated with that advancement, especially in a high cost-of-living area, make me hesitant to compromise on family time.

As I consider my next steps, I’m wondering about the best approach to take. Should I begin applying for new opportunities and trust that employers will understand my unique circumstances, or would it be prudent to consider omitting some roles from my resume?
