First year associate – I don’t know where to go from here

Navigating the Challenges of a First-Year Associate in Tax: A Personal Reflection

As a new associate in a Big Four Accounting firm, it’s been a whirlwind first year, filled with unexpected challenges and a heavy workload. Now, as I approach the completion of my first year in July, I find myself grappling with feelings of isolation and uncertainty.

Currently, I am working from home, wrapped in a blanket and battling tears. In what’s supposed to be a supportive environment, I’m the only first-year associate left in my group. Out of what once was a team of five, many have either switched departments or faced layoffs. This drastic shift only adds to the stress that comes with my role.

With my schedule ramping up to over 40 hours a week—and often hitting 50, 70, or even 80—I feel the weight of the job pressing down on me. Recently, I received notifications that I will be assigned to two more clients, though those tasks are not yet reflected in my schedule. The anticipation of more work looms heavily.

On top of the demanding workload, I am also preparing for the CPA exam, which has proven to be an uphill battle. I’m gearing up to take the Auditor (AUD) section for the fourth time on Monday, and I recently received disappointing news about my Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) score, which dropped significantly despite feeling more prepared than ever.

I am at a crossroads where I’m questioning my ability to continue. The exhaustion is overwhelming, and I fear the next few months will be even more challenging than what I’ve experienced so far. I want to progress to a senior position, but the current job market is daunting, and I’m starting to wonder if a career in Accounting is even what I truly want.

This situation has left me not only feeling defeated but also contemplating my future. If you find yourself in a similar boat, know that you’re not alone, and it’s okay to reach out for support. Taking a step back to assess your goals and well-being is crucial, especially in such a demanding field. Together, we can navigate these challenges and seek paths that align with our aspirations and well-being.
