Found a way to turn YouTube video into verifiable CPD

Revolutionizing CPD: Transforming YouTube Videos into Verifiable Learning Credits

As a chartered accountant with over a decade of experience in tracking and submitting Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours, I often find myself navigating a familiar cycle each year. The buildup of knowledge earned through insightful YouTube videos, enriching podcasts during my commutes, and late-night articles often goes unrecognized when it comes to reporting my CPD achievements.

For eleven months, I engage in meaningful learning, but once the twelfth month rolls around, the reality sets in: none of my self-directed efforts will count towards my professional development requirements. As the deadline looms, I scramble to enroll in last-minute courses or webinars that I find only marginally beneficial, simply to obtain the proof I need in the form of certificates of attendance. It’s frustrating that the valuable knowledge I gain from independent study fails to translate into CPD credits, while the mundane sessions I endure are readily accepted.

This conundrum led me to ponder an intriguing question: what if the educational content I consume—be it a YouTube video, a podcast, or an article—could be converted into verifiable CPD credits? The primary obstacle seemed to be not the volume of learning, but the insufficiency of proof.

During my school years, demonstrating learning was straightforward—pass a quiz, and you’ve proven your comprehension. This sparked my curiosity—if artificial intelligence can analyze video transcripts or written content, could we automate the process of generating a quiz, scoring it, and ultimately issuing a certificate?

With this concept in mind, I developed a simple web application that embodies this idea. Here’s how it works:

  • You input any public link, whether it’s from YouTube, a podcast, or an article.
  • The AI extracts the transcript or text and creates a concise four-question multiple-choice quiz.
  • Achieve a score of 75% or higher, and the script generates a timestamped certificate complete with a scannable QR code for online verification.

I’ve submitted these certificates to three different Accounting bodies of which I am a member, and I’m pleased to report that it’s working seamlessly thus far!

Feel free to reach out if you’re curious or have questions about transforming your informal learning into recognized CPD credits. Let’s make your learning count!
