In college and I don’t think this is what I want to do. What are my options?

Navigating Career Uncertainty: Options Beyond Accounting in Ireland

As a third-year Accounting student in Ireland currently undergoing a work placement in a small practice, I find myself at a crossroads. When I initially chose this course, I was genuinely intrigued and believed a career in Accounting would align with my interests and aspirations. My academic performance reflects my commitment; I excel in my studies and truly enjoy the learning process.

However, the reality of my work placement has been a different story. It’s important to clarify that my dissatisfaction isn’t due to the people I work with—it’s a personal challenge. I’m struggling to align my work with my true interests, leading me to question if a career in this field is right for me.

The nature of the work itself simply does not engage me. While many might suggest that this is a common sentiment in various jobs, my experience is complicated by my untreated ADHD, which makes staying focused on unmotivating tasks particularly difficult. Despite my efforts, I find it challenging to complete assignments, sometimes spending an entire day on a single piece of work, while newer colleagues without an accounting background seem to thrive in the same environment.

Furthermore, the traditional office setting does not appeal to me. I yearn for variety in my daily work and find myself wondering how others manage to remain seated at their desks all day.

As I prepare to enter my final year in September, I am acutely aware that applications for graduate programs will soon open up. It’s clear that a future in practice is not my ideal path. I’m curious whether a shift to industry roles might suit me better or if I would face similar engagement issues there. I came across graduate programs at notable firms like EY that include a “business consulting” track which piqued my interest. My positive experience with management modules in my coursework adds to my curiosity. I would appreciate insights into what a career in business consulting entails and whether my accounting background would be a viable stepping stone into this area.

Additionally, I have contemplated pursuing a master’s degree. My passion for learning persists, yet I feel uncertain about what I would want to do afterwards. The thought of investing significant time and money without a clear direction is daunting.

Financially, I have the option to take time off following graduation, but I worry that an extended break might hinder my ability to re-enter the workforce later.

I am seeking suggestions for graduate programs that align with my degree but venture beyond the realm of traditional accounting. If
