How I went from grocery stocker to CPA: When experience requirements seem impossible

From Grocery Stocker to CPA: Navigating the Roadblocks of an Accounting Career

Embarking on a career in Accounting can often feel like navigating a minefield, particularly when it comes to gaining that coveted experience after obtaining your CPA certification. I want to share my personal journey in hopes it might resonate with others facing similar hurdles.

In June 2013, I proudly passed the Uniform CPA Exam, expecting doors to fly open in the Accounting world. Instead, I encountered a stark reality: certification alone holds little weight without practical experience. For three years, I worked as a grocery stocker in Frederick, juggling bills while immersing myself in my studies. However, my hopes were dashed when I lost a job opportunity to a candidate boasting an impressive 30 years of experience.

Faced with this setback, I made a pivotal decision to adjust my expectations. I discovered that Jackson Hewitt was offering paid training for tax preparers for the upcoming tax season in 2014. Admittedly, the pay was significantly lower than what new CPAs typically earn, but it was a valuable office position where I could put my accounting and tax knowledge into practice—a crucial step for anyone trying to transition into the field.

That initial role, though far from glamorous, laid the groundwork for my entire accounting career. It taught me that sometimes, all you need is to find a way to gain entry into the industry. Breaking the “no experience” cycle requires an open mind and a willingness to start from the bottom.

I encourage anyone who feels stuck in similar circumstances to embrace humility and seek opportunities—any opportunity. Starting from a lower position can be enlightening and provide momentum for career advancement.

To anyone searching for their first break after passing exams or earning a degree without relevant experience: keep your search active, remain flexible, and don’t hesitate to take that first step, even if it seems small.

I would love to hear from others who have successfully entered the accounting field through unconventional means. How did you overcome the experience barrier?
