MY QUESTION: For those of you working in finance and Audit in the UAE, how do you see the job prospects for a 25-26 year old Canadian graduate with a CIA and CISA certification, Big 4 experience, and a US CPA designation?
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: I graduated with a degree in Accounting and finance from Brock University in Canada in April 2021. From the start of my university journey, my goal was to earn my Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. However, as I approached graduation, I sought to diversify my skills and experiences. After finishing my degree, I began studying for the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) exams and the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) exam, putting my CPA plans on hold for the time being.
In August, I moved to Pakistan for personal reasons and joined one of the Big 4 Audit firms in an IT Audit role. Although my background is in Accounting and finance, I chose this path to broaden my expertise in line with growing industry trends. My interest in IT auditing and understanding IT General Controls (ITGCs) prompted me to pursue both the CIA and CISA certifications.
I recently attempted Part 1 of the CIA exam and scored 594, just shy of the passing mark of 600. While I was initially disappointed, I decided to focus on studying for both Part 1 and Part 2, and I’m currently in the final stages of my preparation.
My plan is to complete my CIA and CISA certifications while gaining more experience in IT audit and internal audit at a Big 4 firm. After achieving that, I intend to relocate to the UAE in a year or two. Regarding my CPA, I plan to pursue it from the USA, as my Canadian citizenship qualifies me to take the exams. However, that will be on the back burner for about a year.
