1st year has been a struggle

Reflecting on my first year

As a 32-year-old in my first year at an Accounting firm, I’ve faced quite a few challenges. Transitioning from a completely different field back to school for Accounting has been a journey, and while I feel more confident now, there’s still so much to learn. I often find myself feeling insecure, especially when I notice younger colleagues seem more at ease in their roles. I’ve managed to pass 2 out of 4 sections of the CPA exam, but after a comment from my boss yesterday, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being inadequate. I’m curious if it’s common to feel this way in the first year, especially as someone who’s not right out of college. Does it really get better?

  1. It’s completely normal to feel the way you do in your first year, especially when transitioning into a new field. Many people experience a steep learning curve when starting a new job, regardless of age or previous experience. It’s great that you’re feeling better now, and remember that growth takes time.

Comparing yourself to younger colleagues can be tough, but your life experience and resilience are valuable assets that they may not have yet. Passing two sections of the CPA exam is a significant achievement, and you’re on the right path.

As for your boss’s comment, try not to internalize it too much. Everyone has moments of insecurity in the workplace, and it’s often more about their perception than your capabilities.

Yes, it does get better! With time, you’ll become more confident and comfortable in your role. Keep focusing on your learning and growth, and don’t hesitate to seek feedback and support from your colleagues. You’ve got this!
